HELP US TO HELP THE HOMELESS
Our wintertime Overflow Homeless Shelter opened Sunday November 27, 2011, and will be open until April 30, 2012. This is our fifth year providing overnight space at our church in conjunction with the Brattleboro Area Drop In Center's program.  This is a broad community volunteer effort taking place in our social hall, parlor, kitchen, and 2d floor rooms.

A warm evening meal is provided each night by one of the local churches, the synagogue, or other community groups taking a turn.  Wednesday nights we take a turn and we call our effort that night "Graces Kitchen." The first year there were 49 individuals who stayed here. The second year there were 151 individuals, and we provided over 4,000 bed nights. This year we are expecting about 250 or more individuals who will stay here.  Perhaps someday we will be able to replace our furnace, for which fuel oil cost us about $24,000.00 last year. When the Homeless Shelter is in operation, it requires a lot more oil because we have to keep the temperature higher at night for the comfort of our guests.  The Drop In Center applies for a fuel grant of $3,500 each year which it contributes toward the church's fuel expenses housing the Shelter.

There are several newspaper articles that detail our efforts to help the homeless and less fortunate

Boston Globe article Metro section pages b1 and b4 11-23-09
"Putting its mission before its treasure"
"Church aiding homeless will sell Tiffany gem"
"In life," said Vera Deyo, "a member of the church for over 50 years. You give up things and GOD makes you rich again."
"No one wants to see this go," said the Rev Suzanne Andrews, the church's pastor. "But to think that a majority of people voted to part with a Tiffany window to help the poor is a miracle."
